Business Coaching: Team Development
Team development is a process put together and planned for and not left up to happenstance. Putting a group of people together to perform any task or activity will not develop a team, no matter how long they are together. People with dominating personalities will dominate others who will feel dominated and may even drop their performance as a result which causes a loss in overall effectiveness of the people who are supposed to be working together.
In the USA, we have put a high priority on individualism and taking care of things yourself as opposed to depending on others. The truth is nothing great ever happens because of a single person, no matter who they are. The most famous people in any area from movies to business and everything in between have had the help of others in their life to attain their greatness even if those people are never specifically named before the public.
An important aspect of team development is recognizing the different strengths and weaknesses of the individuals on the team. The idea is for the strengths to all compliment each other so that one persons strengths make up for another persons weakness. Each person must be accepted and respected for what they bring to the table and then utilized to the fullest.
Team Development Must Be Intentional
Companies must make a conscious effort to provide opportunities to invest in team development. A part of this effort should be training by a professional in the dynamics of teams and what it takes to make them successful. A one time training event will not automatically create a great team but will put the team on the road to becoming a great team over time and can even cut down on the learning curve to become the team you desire.
